The name of my blog is based on the lovely poem of the same name by Jane Yolen (Poetry 180 - Fat Is Not a Fairy Tale). When I first read this poem I was struck by two things: first, that the title was initially misleading (which I love!) and second, that Ms. Yolen’s ideas can really resonate with a large group of people.
The poem speaks in favor of a world where, as Yolen so wonderfully put it, “everything round is good,” where a girl (or woman) is self-sufficient and happy with who she is even if she has “fingers as plump as sausages” and isn’t “wasp-waisted." The poem speaks to me on so many levels. It says be happy with who you are! Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and there is hope for a world that can see that fact.
